Ashburn Couple Fixes Tacky Bathroom with Granite
The clients had decided to move out of the city to get away from the hustle and bustle, but were not quite ready for country life. They bought a 2-bedroom 1,100 square-foot townhouse with two full baths. It had been beautifully renovated in the traditional style, but the clients disliked the laminate vanity tops of the bathrooms, saying they looked “tacky.” We were called in to make an estimate for replacements.
Choosing the granite
Because the kitchen countertops had been done up in granite, the clients wanted the same or similar design for the bathroom vanities. However, the kitchen countertops were dark, and since the bathrooms were done in white and were quite small, the dark stone would tend to cut the lines of the vanity, making the bathroom look a bit cramped. We recommended a light-colored granite to keep the lines clean and continuous. We took our measurements and asked the clients to come in for a look-through of the showroom for a light granite they might like.
The clients selected a few of the more expensive stones that caught their fancy, but some of them were really not going to work with the overall look of the kitchen. We explained this to them in a diplomatic way, steering them to the stones that we thought would make the bathroom look “less tacky.” It took a while, but they finally agreed on a granite.
Pre-installation
We sent over the fabricator that afternoon to make a template of the vanity tops. The clients had decided to keep the sink, which were nice clear glass over-the-counter bowls. It would look perfect against the new granite tops. It would take one day to make the cutouts as the stone slab was available, so we sent the work crew to remove the old vanity tops and sink, and to prepare the support structures for the new countertops. They carted away all the discarded materials, but left the work area in place in case the installer needed to make any corrections to the stone pieces.
Installing the stones
The stones were cut without issue. The vanity tops were in one piece, so there would be no seams. The edges took a little longer, but the finished pieces were delivered the next day as scheduled. They fit without a problem, so the installer bonded it permanently to the support structure before sealing. The installation took just a a couple of hours. The installer disassembled the work area and took it away.
Post Installation
The clients were very pleased with how fast we worked, and really likes the look of the new vanities. The clear glass sink went very well with the granite, and the stone brought a much-needed relief to the all-white bathroom whilst maintaining the clean lines of the theme.

Ashburn, VA
Ashburn is not a city, but a census-designated place, in Loudoun County. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area and about 30 miles from Washington D.C. It is a 7-minute drive from Dulles International Airport.
The original name of Ashburn was Farmwell, which was the name of the mansion of a certain George Lee III. He owned a plantation in the area. A portion of it along the west end of Ashburn Road was bought by Quaker lawyer John Janney. He called it Ashburn Farm. It was later bought by “Silver Senator” William Morris Stewart. Sometime in 1896, an ash tree on the Senator’s property was struck by lightning, and purportedly burned for a week. When the townspeople were asked to change the name of the now-commercial village.
They chose Ashburn, in commemoration of the struck ash tree, and to honor the Stewart as its leading citizen. The village became a hub of commerce in Loudoun County from 1880 to 1920. It was known to be an excellent spot for bass fishing. Today, Ashburn plays host to many high-tech companies including Verizon Business, Telos, and EADS North America.
Ashburn is essentially a college town, playing host to both Georgetown University and Cordoba University. However, its recreational focus is more on family-friendly outdoor fun rather than the spring fling variety, You will find a variety of parks and trails for horseback riding, biking, walking, and rollerblading. There are also a variety of malls and Imax cinemas in the area. You can do some serious shopping and catch up on the latest flicks.
If you want some sports action, the Ashburn Ice House offers ice skating and ice hockey lessons. You could also head over to the Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion to go swimming and boating, play racquetball, go fishing, or simply relax in a steam room. You can also play a serious round of golf at Brambleton Regional Park, which features an 18-hole championship level golf course. It is open to the public, so you don’t have to be a member.
