Kitchen Island Takes Center Stage in Chantilly Home

The client lives in a cheerful 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom split level home in Pleasant Valley on a quarter-acre lot. With three rambunctious boys aged 9 through 13, it was a very lived-in home. However, the client’s wife didn’t like the wood laminate on her kitchen island. The main kitchen counters were of granite, and she wanted granite for her island as well. The client contacted us to put on a new top to the island.

Consultation

The consultation was short, as the client wanted the same granite for the island as the existing counters. Upon inspection, we determined was Amazon Star granite (or close enough to no difference) with a classic edge profile. The island was 4×2 feet, which is about a quarter slab with no cutouts, so it was a straightforward measurement without the need for templates. We scheduled installation two days after if the client agreed to the price.

Installation

Cutting the stone for the island counter went quickly. But the edge took the better part of four hours to do as it required some precision cutting and polishing. We could deliver the counter the next day. Installation took just under two hours, including removing the old counter and putting in the additional support needed for the heavier stone.

Post installation

The client was on hand to observe the installation. After the stone was polished, he commented that while the stone was indeed darker than the surrounding counters. It was a much nicer design, and would be the center of attraction in the kitchen. The wife liked it very much, and thought it was a good idea all around, especially with the lower cost of the stone. She mused out loud how much it would take to replace all the counters with the same stone. The look on the client’s face was priceless!

Chantilly, VA

Chantilly is a community in France. It sounds so delicate it was used to describe handmade lace, or Chantilly lace, which is also the name of a rock and roll referring to a giggly, pretty girl. The Chantilly in Fairfax County, however, is a census-designated place refers more to the Chateau de Chantilly of France. It was the name of the plantation owned by the grandfather of Cornelia Lee Sturberville in Westmoreland County. After she named the plantation in Leeton she inherited in 1817. Her grandfather was Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Sturberville, together with her husband Charles Calvert Stuart, owned the Chantilly Plantation, one of many in the area. However, this was the name the village chose to call their community and continues to this day. All that is left of the original plantation is the overseer’s quarters. Because the manor and other buildings were burned down during the Civil War.

Chantilly is a suburb of Washington, D.C, which is around 25 miles away. It is surrounded by Reston, Fairfax, Herndon, and Centreville. It was only in the 1980s that development in Chantilly really took off as a result of a surge in construction of residential and commercial property.  

You should visit the home of Richard Bland Lee, Robert E. Lee’s uncle and northern Virginia’s first congressional representative. It used to be called the Sully Plantation, but is now known as the Sully Historic Site. It has been kept as it had been back in the 18th Century, which in itself is a treat.
